Total knee replacement is usually considered when knee arthritis is advanced — daily activities like walking, climbing stairs, or sleeping are limited by pain, and non-surgical measures (physiotherapy, weight loss, medications, injections) have stopped helping. Imaging typically shows severe joint-space narrowing. The goal is to restore function and eliminate pain; modern implants reliably last 15–20 years.

Navigation and robotic systems use real-time computer guidance to place the implant and balance the soft tissues with sub-millimetre precision. Evidence suggests this improves alignment accuracy and reduces outlier positioning, which can translate into a more natural-feeling knee. Dr Mukherjee completed a dedicated fellowship in Navigation Arthroplasty at the Golden Jubilee National Hospital, Glasgow.

Arthroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure where a small camera and fine instruments are passed through tiny incisions (5–10 mm). It is used for ACL / PCL reconstruction, meniscus repair, cartilage procedures, rotator cuff repair, shoulder stabilisation, and more. Benefits include smaller scars, less blood loss, shorter hospital stay, and faster return to activity.

Orthobiologics are biological treatments that use the body’s own cells and growth factors to heal joint and soft-tissue problems. They include platelet-rich plasma (PRP) for tendon and muscle injuries, autologous chondrocyte implantation for cartilage defects, and stem cell / osteoblast therapy for avascular necrosis. These are often used to delay or avoid joint replacement in carefully selected patients.

Most patients are walking with a walker within 24 hours of surgery and are discharged in 3–5 days. Full return to normal daily activities typically takes 6 weeks, with continued strength and range-of-motion gains up to 3–6 months. A structured physiotherapy programme is essential.
